For this assignment, I visited the class web page of Mr. Gash, who is one of my very own former teachers. Mr. Gash teaches AP Environmental Science and Honors Biology to all grade high school grade levels at Bartram Trail High School, my alma mater, located in Saint Johns, Florida. His website lacks much creative design and has few functional links to his class syllabi, lab contract, cell phone policy, integrity policy, parent and parent information. Gash also includes his contact information. The only visual he has on his sight is the DNA Structure gif. This is not Gash's only website however. He uses an alternative teaching web page/ app to keep in contact with students, and accept online assignments called Edmodo. Gash is not alone in this. I found that majority of teachers now use password protected sites such as "Edmodo" and "Schoolology" which are more detailed teacher sites. Unfortunately, because they are password protected, I was unable to access and explore them.
I imagine that I will use technology often in my classroom because technology really is the key to the future. Technology through the form of a teacher website allows teachers to interact and teach students in and out of the classroom. Through a website a teacher can post online lectures, have students submit their assignments, and post additional recourses such as study guides and practice questions. Not to mention it serves as a great source of communication between students and their parents and teachers.
I loved our trip to the Sandbox. I can not tell you how many times I have sat in a class and watched my teacher struggle to use her Smart Board. This not only makes the teacher look unprepared, but also can be a major waste of both the student and the teachers time. I believe with the use of the Sandbox it will help teachers be better prepared and educated on the use of the technology they will be using every day in their classroom. This preparation will save them not only embarrassment but also time that is oh so valuable.
